About Me
Neelu Kalra, MD
Board certified in Allergy, Asthma & Immunology and Internal Medicine
I enjoy treating patients of all ages from infants to the elderly. My strength is in delivering effective treatment options to meet each patient’s unique needs.
I completed my residency and fellowship at Penn State University, where I received rigorous training in complex allergic diseases, asthma, and immune deficiency. During my fellowship I served as chief fellow and later as an Assistant Professor training future physicians and advancing clinical care. I graduated medical school as a gold medalist, achieving the highest academic distinction.
My academic work includes peer reviewed publications, text book chapters and contributions to clinical trials. I remain active in national scientific meetings to stay at the forefront of emerging therapies. I mentor and teach upcoming physicians from KU Medicine and Kansas osteopathic college of medicine.
Living in one of the most challenging allergy regions in the country, many Kansas patients still lack access to comprehensive, specialized allergy and immunology care. My clinic is created to close this gap. I provide expert, personalized care for day-to-day allergies as well as most complex allergic and immunologic conditions, using the latest evidence-based and innovative treatments to help patients achieve lasting control and an improved quality of life.

Allergies are your body’s response to substances that your immune system mistakenly identifies as harmful.
Emergency Symptoms
Adults can NOT develop allergies = False. As we age our immune system weakens. Most adults have had a prior allergic episode in their childhood that they may not remember. This can lay dormant throughout childhood and teenage years but resurface later in life.
Eating locally produced honey builds up immunity = False. Honey is made from pollens of flowers. Most people’s allergies are from pollen from trees, grass and weeds and they are NOT found in home
Using decongestant nasal spray frequently is bad for you = True. They are NOT for long term treatment. Chemicals in decongestant nasal spray shrink blood vessels responsible for causing congestion. Using them too much makes these blood vessels dependent on nasal sprays and you have to use more & more to get same results. Instead use nasal corticosteroids as they carry less risk.
Iodine is cause of allergic reactions to radiocontrast material or to seafood = False. Radiocontrast material enhances visibility of tissues and organs in medical imaging procedures. Tropomyosin (a fish equivalent to human muscle protein) is the antigen responsible for allergic reactions to seafood.

- Has benefits that last long after therapy ends
How does SCIT work ?
- For first 7-8 months, patients receive injection/s per week to achieve maintenance dosing
- Allergy shots dosing is stretched to every 2-3 weeks for short period and finally once a month for minimum 3 years, ideally 5 years
Allergy Drops Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT)
-
Average cost are approximately $95 to $115
Average cost are approximately $95 (environmental allergy drops) to $115 (food allergy drops) per month for the length of treatment, typically 3-5 years.
SLIT Immunotherapy, also known as allergy drops work similar to allergy shots and treat allergies at their source. By placing small droplets of allergen extracts under the tongue each day, your immune system is gradually trained to achieve tolerance to allergens that cause allergic reactions
It is a safe and convenient route to build long-term tolerance, making it ideal for patients who aren’t candidates for shots.
Allergy drops is a great option for both children and adults. It can be extremely helpful part of management in young children with conditions like eczema, allergic asthma and allergic rhinitis and an effective tool for patients who prefer to avoid injections, have busy schedules or want a more flexible treatment plan.
Most patients notice improvement within few months of being on immunotherapy, lasting benefits come with consistent use over 3-5 years.
